Storing Your Automobile Securely
Protecting your vehicle from serious damage while storing it at a vehicle storage facility is very important. There are certain things that you need to do to prevent your vehicle’s battery from corroding and leaking. There are also ways you can prevent moisture from building and your gas getting sticky.
Here is what you must do and types of storage available:
1. Be sure and fill your car with gas to eliminate any empty space in the tank. This is because the empty space can cause moisture build up with will end of causing the inside of the tank to rust. Another great tip is to pour in a fuel stabilizing product that stops oxidation. This is what helps to keep your gas from getting sticky while sitting still.
2. Remove parking brake! Never use your parking brake when storing your vehicle. Not only is it unnecessary, but it can cause your brake pads from becoming melded to the rotors. This can cause real problems when trying to remove the parking brake.
3. Wash, wax, & clean your car - It’s important to make sure all traces of food & dirty/damp floor mats are removed. These items can cause moisture inside the car and damage sensitive equipment. Also, keeping your car clean will help prevent corrosion.
4. Decide on a storage location which has a lot of great features and security. Locating a facility that offers entirely paved surfaces as well as 24/7 security is your best bet.
5. Covered - This is not entirely enclosed storage, but at least it gives your vehicle a roof to sit under. This helps to protect it from the elements. It’s a decent type of storage, but does not have as many benefits as entirely enclosed storage.
6. Entirely enclose storage - This type of storage is pretty much a garage for your car. It’s locked up and no one can see or access your vehicle except for you. It protects your car from all the elements and it’s the best type of storage you can find.
7. Outside Storage - This kind of storage is best for items that will not get damaged with prolonged exposure to the sun; like utility trailers, flat bed carriers & boat trailers.
The most important thing you can do is to eliminate moisture from building up in your vehicle. This is what causes the most damage above everything else. Take these tips listed here, apply them and it will help you to keep your vehicle safe while being stored away.
