If you are planning a safari holiday but unsure as to where to go then consider Africa as a destination that will fascinate and excite. An African safari is something that should be experienced by anyone who wants a taste of the wild outdoors and the chance to watch exotic animals in their natural habitat.

When you are planning a safari there are a few decisions to be considered before making a choice for your safari destination. Consider what types of animals you would like to see whilst on safari, the best of time of year to go and the kind of holiday you want. Whilst some people are after a real, wild experience, sleeping in a tent and out in the wilderness for days, others just want to go out on safari for a few hours before returning to their luxury resort to relax.

The most exciting part of any safari has to be the kinds of animals you will see. Popular choices include lions and tigers, elephants, rhinoceros and leopards. If you want to see these large creatures then you need to head to Kenya or South Africa where there are safaris that offer sightings of all these animals. Rwanda, Uganda or Gabon are great destinations to see gorillas and you will definitely see elephants in Botswana. There are plenty of hippos and crocodiles floating around the lakes and rivers of East and Southern Africa and for the ornithologists amongst you, head to a birding safari in East and Southern Africa.

It’s important to know what types of animals you will spot at the safari before you book it as you don’t want to be disappointed. Another aspect to consider for your safari trip is where you will be staying. Some people relish the idea of sleeping under the stars at night in the bush in a tent, whilst for others it would be unthinkable.

There are a variety of methods of experiencing a safari in Africa. The most common method is to travel by a 4×4 vehicle which can easily navigate the rough terrain. Other safari’s will give you the option of getting around on the back of an elephant, as they can generally be seen and heard from some distance these aren’t always the best options to see wild game but if you have never been on an elephant before, it is a great experience. A walking safari is for those who are fit and used to trekking and can provide the opportunity to experience up close the sights, smells and sounds of the African bush. Canoeing safari trips can be taken along the Zambezi River where you will see plenty of hippos and crocodiles and elephants cross the river.

If you are after a luxury holiday or on honeymoon, one truly exceptional method of going on safari is to experience it by air balloon. Some of the larger National Parks now offer the opportunity to see the plains and wildlife from a hot air balloon and it is becoming an increasingly popular way to experience the African safari.

Kenya is most peoples choice for safari, choose a camel safari in the Samburu and Turkana tribal areas between Isiolo and Lake Turkana, an unforgettable experience for anyone. The Masai Mara National Reserve is highly rated and you are guaranteed to see numerous wild and beautiful animals. Visit the Amboseli famous for its black rhinos or the intense Kakamega with over 300 species of birds. For an outstanding, aerial impression of the Mara and Serengeti, there are a few lodges in the Masai Mara National Reserve offer ballooning trips, or you could even try microlighting.

Whatever type of holiday you are planning in Africa there is something to suit everyone. Safari’s, white water rafting, adventure holidays, luxury beaches and first class resorts, they can all be experienced in this vast country. Africa is like no other continent; its vastness supplies it with spectacular scenery and unequaled wildlife.

If you are looking for a luxury destination for a once in a lifetime holiday or a special honeymoon then a holiday in Africa is the perfect destination to head to. Tailor made holidays in unique and colorful destinations like Kenya, Soneva Fushi and Oman can be designed to meet your needs and fulfill all your expectations.
